Specialized Therapeutic Approaches

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a brain and body-based modality that works from the bottom up to get to the underlying issues, process what has become stuck, and move towards healing and change. It aligns itself with the idea that when we move through and process our issues, we can release the trauma held in our bodies and minds so that these long-carried issues no longer have the same emotional power and hold on us.

What does it look like? Think about a time when you have found yourself talking or thinking deeply about something. Or, notice the next time you find yourself deeply connected with your words or thoughts. Did you notice yourself looking in a certain direction as you did so? You might even find that it is something you do on a regular basis. Brainspotting harnesses the “where you look affects how you feel” concept and taps into our innate ability to regulate ourselves and heal. It is a great option for those who have tried traditional talk therapy in the past and still find themselves in the same place with the issue.

Geek Therapy

Geek Therapy is a frame of mind where the helping professional understands the importance a person’s interests and utilizes them as a strength and a vehicle for change. For instance, your love of sports, games, books, movies, programming, or music, for example, can be a great tool for growth. There are stories and metaphors within your interests that lend a wealth of knowledge and support. For example:

  • Star Trek: Have you ever found yourself in a no-win situation, like the Kobayashi Maru? What did you do and what did you learn about yourself?

  • The Matrix: Do you take the “red pill” and learn a life-changing and potentially uncomfortable truth that will give you more clarity and choice, or do you take the “blue pill” and stay with the uncomfortable pain that is familiar? Which option feels better for you right now?

  • Pokemon/DnD/RPG/video games: What are your stats? What skills/moves/abilities do you have and what skills/moves/abilities would you like to learn? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Does this situation play to your strengths and if not, what can you bring into the frame to give you an edge?

  • Music: What song resonates with what you have been dealing with? Why does it it speak to you the way it does?

These interests are part of your world, and anything that is a part of your world and is important to you can be important and useful in therapy, too! As a Geek Therapist, I would be happy to join your world and help you move onto the next level.
